Coronado Weather & Tide Pools Guide

Coronado enjoys over 265 days of sunshine every year and a gentle Mediterranean climate. Explore monthly temperatures, ocean water warmth, and real user photography of the marine life waiting in the Central Beach tide pools.

TIDE PREDICTOR & LOGISTICS

How to Time Your Coronado Tide Pool Visit

Unlike sandy beaches that are always accessible, tide pools require specific astronomical conditions. Water recedes to expose the deepest rock fissures only during negative low tides.

Target Negative Tides (Below 0.0 ft)

Aim for tides measuring between -0.5 ft and -1.6 ft. These occur during new moon and full moon cycles, revealing the deepest, most vibrant sea star and anemone colonies.

The 45-Minute Arrival Window

Arrive 45 to 60 minutes before the predicted lowest tide point. This allows you to follow the receding water outward safely and explore before the incoming tide returns.

Winter vs. Summer Daylight Timing

From November through March, the deepest negative low tides happen during daylight afternoon hours (2:00 PM to 5:00 PM). In summer, negative low tides occur in the early morning before 6:30 AM.

Official NOAA Station

Coronado follows NOAA San Diego Tide Station (Station ID 9410170). Check official forecasts for accurate daily high and low tide tables.

MARINE STEWARDSHIP

Tide Pool Etiquette

Central Beach tide pools are delicate living nurseries. Please follow these guidelines to keep wildlife thriving:

Wear Sturdy, Non-Slip Footwear Intertidal rocks are covered in slick micro-algae and wet sea lettuce. Wear water shoes or sneakers with rubber treads. Avoid flip-flops or bare feet.
Observe with Eyes and Wet Fingers Never pry sea stars, limpets, or chitons off the rocks. Their suction tube feet can tear, which proves fatal. If touching an anemone, wet your finger first and touch gently.
Leave Every Shell & Rock Untouched Coronado tide pools are protected habitats. Hermit crabs depend on empty shells for survival. Rocks provide essential shelter for vulnerable juvenile creatures.
Never Turn Your Back on the Ocean Rogue sets of waves can sweep across rock platforms without warning, even during low tide. Always stay mindful of incoming swell and rising tides.
NEGATIVE LOW TIDE MARVEL

The SS Monte Carlo Sunken Shipwreck (1937)

During negative winter tides (lower than -0.5 ft), the surf pulls back on Coronado South Beach (0.25 miles south of Hotel del Coronado) to reveal the skeletal hull of the SS Monte Carlo. Anchored three miles offshore as a Prohibition gambling ship and speakeasy, the 300-foot vessel grounded during a violent New Year's Day gale in 1937.

Explorer Safety Advisory: Submerged rebar and jagged barnacles cover the hull. Never climb on the wreck. View and photograph from the wet sands at maximum low tide.

Frequently Asked Weather & Ocean Questions

What is the best month to swim in the ocean at Coronado?

August and September feature the warmest ocean water of the year, averaging 68°F to 72°F. During these late summer months, the surf is gentle and comfortable for swimming without a wetsuit.

What is May Gray and June Gloom in Coronado?

May Gray and June Gloom describe a seasonal coastal marine layer common along Southern California beaches. Deep ocean waters keep the coastal air cool, forming dense morning overcast or fog that typically burns off by 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM into pleasant, sunny afternoons.

When are the best negative tides for tide pooling in Coronado?

The most dramatic negative low tides (ranging from -0.5 ft to -1.8 ft) occur during winter months (November through February), particularly during new and full moon cycles. Daytime low tides expose rocky reefs and the sunken 1937 SS Monte Carlo shipwreck.

Does it rain often in Coronado?

No. Coronado enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with more than 265 sunny days per year and average annual rainfall under 10 inches. Rain is virtually absent between June and October, with the majority of brief showers falling from December to March.

What should I pack to wear in Coronado during winter?

Winter daytime temperatures are comfortable, averaging 65°F with bright sunshine, perfect for light trousers and short-sleeved shirts. However, coastal evening breezes drop temperatures into the upper 40s and low 50s, so packing a fleece jacket, sweater, or windbreaker is essential.
