Beyond world-class beaches lies an island rich with Gilded Age drama, Broadway-caliber resident theatre, Frank Baum's Emerald City inspiration, and sunken Prohibition gambling shipwrecks.

#1 Sunken Prohibition Speakeasy Maritime History & Nature

The SS Monte Carlo Shipwreck

The 300-foot concrete oil tanker was anchored three miles off Coronado in international waters during the 1930s, operating as a glamorous offshore gambling and drinking ship. On New Year's Day 1937, severe gale force storm winds snapped the ship's dual anchor lines, drifting the massive vessel onto Coronado South Beach. Stripped by salvagers and left to the waves, its concrete and iron skeleton remains buried beneath the surf sand, surfacing during extreme negative king tides.

Curator Insider Guidance
Check the NOAA Coronado tide tables for tides lower than -0.5 ft. Do not climb on the hull remnants, as rusted rebar and sharp barnacles are submerged in the wave wash. Stand on the wet beach sand for photographs.
