Visitor Questions Answered

Coronado Military Heritage FAQs

Can civilian visitors enter Naval Air Station North Island?

No. Entrance through the installation security gates is restricted to active duty military, retirees, DoD civilians, and escorted visitors with valid credentials. However, anyone can watch aircraft carriers and naval helicopters from North Beach, Sunset Park, or Centennial Park with zero base access requirements.

Why is Coronado called the Birthplace of Naval Aviation?

In January 1911, aviation pioneer Glenn H. Curtiss established an experimental flight school on North Island. He completed the first successful hydroaeroplane flight from San Diego Bay water and trained Lieutenant Theodore G. Ellyson, who was commissioned as United States Naval Aviator Number 1.

Where can I see Navy SEAL training in Coronado?

Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training takes place at the Naval Special Warfare Center on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. While the military campus itself is secure, public beach walkers along the ocean shoreline of Silver Strand State Beach frequently observe training classes conducting soft-sand conditioning runs and boat drills in the Pacific surf.

Where can I learn more about Coronado's naval history?

The Coronado Historical Association Museum at 1100 Orange Avenue houses permanent exhibits dedicated to naval aviation pioneers, Navy SEAL origins, and Admiral Stockdale's legacy. Admission is free (donations welcome).
